The Water Security Challenge

Defining "Water Security" for better law.

Getting to a Water Security Framework depends on having a clear vision for water security, which starts with how we depend on water and the laws governing those relationships. Our first report focuses on the challenges facing the world’s water, laying out a compelling overview of the threats and opportunities, and the role that the law can and does play.

In our inaugural white paper, we define water security and identify the ten critical legal nexuses that influence the advancement of water security. We define water security as the ability to safeguard an availability of water sufficient to sustain lives and livelihoods and protect against threats to and from water. On that basis we identify ten nexuses, each which addresses the relationship better water and:

-Agriculture

-Natural Resources and Services

-Natural Disasters

-Sanitation, Drinking Water, Health and Hygiene

-Energy

-Infrastructure

-The Global Economy

-Peace and Conflict

-National Security

-Governance and Institutions

Understanding how the law governs these ten nexuses is essential to understanding how laws create a viable enabling environment for advancing water security.
